Reed kicks Steelers past Panthers
Associated Press

PITTSBURGH -- As Carolina's starters left the field following pregame warmups, coach John Fox was waiting with a surprise: They were getting the night off.

It's merely an illusion that, except for Jeff Reed and Rashard Mendenhall, the Pittsburgh Steelers' offense has been resting for a couple of weeks.

Reed kicked his fourth field goal of the game and his eighth in less than a week, a 43-yarder on the last play, and the Steelers beat the Panthers' backups 19-16 on Thursday night in the final exhibition game for both teams.

Carolina, holding out 25 players, didn't do much offensively except for three field goals by John Kasay until No. 3 quarterback Brett Basanez threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Chris Hannon with 1:54 remaining. Fox opted to kick the extra point and try for overtime, something most coaches look to avoid in games that don't count.

"If it there was a little less time I probably would have (gone for a 2-point conversion) but, either way, we were going to have to stop a two-minute drive," Fox said.

Panthers strike in air, on ground, on defense
Running game rolls in rout of Redskins

By Charles Chandlercchandler@charlotteobserver.com

If the NFL were a stock market, there would be a run on the Carolina Panthers when trading opened Monday morning.

The Panthers had a blue-chip Saturday night exhibition at Bank of America Stadium, thrashing the listless Washington Redskins 47-3.

Carolina set a franchise preseason scoring record, breaking the mark set in a 34-7 win against the New York Giants in 1996.

They tied that record in the first half, then surpassed it early in the third quarter before the starters left the game.

I'm not that down on them

I got a good vibe about this team man :-) Way to go Richard Marshall. DOn't like that chokejob in the 4th quarter though even though it was 3rd and 4th stringers. No one likes goin out like that.

I believe I've predicted a 20+ sack season for Julius Peppers. If not here it is, if so, here it is again. Pic is another beast on defense Jon Beason

Panthers stumble in 4th quarter
Philadelphia rallies to win game delayed by lightning

PHILADELPHIA Only the lightning that delayed play 58 minutes was more electric than the way Carolina's Richard Marshall turned Philadelphia's trickery into treachery.

In an exhibition Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field that lasted much longer than either team preferred, the Eagles tried to get cute and paid the price.

Philadelphia had an excellent chance to break a scoreless tie late in the first quarter when ultra-reliable kicker David Akers lined up for a 34-yard field-goal attempt.

In opener, Panthers as good as expected
By Tom Sorensen

Tom Sorensen

On defense, it was the tall guy.

Carolina's Julius Peppers lined up at a new position, right end, and overwhelmed second-year tackle Tony Ugoh. It was as if Peppers was accompanied into the Indianapolis backfield by a police escort. He never had to stop, rarely had to slow down and on some plays didn't even have to show his I.D.

On the Colts first series Peppers sacked quarterback Jim Sorgi and forced a fumble that was recovered by defensive end Charles Johnson. On the next series Peppers cruised into the backfield and pressured Sorgi. This time, Sorgi didn't fumble. He was intercepted. Middle linebacker Adam Seward picked off the pass.

Already squashed

But 2 games man...2 games...Use your head man!

Smitty's relapsed

Last time he beat someone down was in 2002. You know he's overdue 4 one dammit. I think it's good for the team tho. They'll squash it. And they'll do great things this year watch :-)

Smitty! You got nothing to prove today. You're the top dog...I mean top cat/panther. Take it easy baby :-)

Steve Smith is my favorite panther of all time, but I'm really mad @ him man. Those people that know me know how I am with my Panthers.

We open the season @ San Diego...My a$$ is there already...But my excitement is kinda down now since Smitty will miss that game and the next one because he decided to re-arrange Ken Lucas' facual features. Fuck you Smitty! The team now will have to show you, and they will, that they can win without your punk-ass. You've already defined your season. You need to do some serious self-redemption on and off the field.

Well, welcome back to my kitties. I need at least 10 wins. And Foxie! You know your job is on the line this season.

Panthers suspend star receiver Smith for two games
Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Receiver Steve Smith was suspended two games by the Carolina Panthers after a training camp fight with cornerback Ken Lucas.

Smith, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, will continue to practice when training camp resumes Monday and will be allowed to participate in preseason games, coach John Fox said Saturday.

Lucas, who left the practice field at Wofford College on Friday with ice over his left eye, has a broken nose, Fox said. Smith was kicked out of practice and sent back to Charlotte.

"What (Smith) did was wrong and we take very serious and he is being punished severely for it," Fox said.

The melee came after both players had taken off their helmets in a break for starters during a special teams drill. It was unclear what provoked the fight. While the two have routinely jawed at each other in practice since Lucas signed with Carolina in 2005, they've never come to blows in view of reporters.
